Hieu Truong, scientific collaborator at the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED), is honored to receive the Robert Austrian Research Award in recognition of his work on pneumococcal disease and vaccine-preventable infections in children in Vietnam.

Building on the findings of his PhD thesis, his next research project will evaluate the real-world impact of PCV13 introduction in Vietnam, a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine protecting against 13 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, through community carriage surveys, invasive pneumococcal disease surveillance, whole-genome sequencing, antimicrobial resistance analysis, and cost-effectiveness modeling. This work aims to generate evidence for sustainable vaccine policy, strengthen disease surveillance systems, and support data-driven public health decision-making. These closely aligned with the mission of EM-DAT in supporting global health and disaster-related data systems.

He looks forward to contributing further to research at the intersection of epidemiology, public health, and data-driven decision-making.
