Vietnam is located on the eastern coast of mainland Southeast Asia. The two main disaster types with the highest occurrence are flooding, with 64 occurrences (48% of disasters recorded), and storm, with 61 occurrences (46%). Flooding and storm are also the deadliest disaster types in Vietnam. Between 2000 and 2018, floods have killed 2798 people (59% of fatalities recorded) while storms resulted in 1804 fatalities (38%). During this period, the deadliest disaster event was a flood in 2000, that killed 460 people. This flood was also the disaster event that affected the most people in Vietnam with an estimated five million. The disaster types affecting the most people in Vietnam are also flooding and storm, with 17 566 168 (46% of people affected) and 16 777 007 (44%) affected people, respectively.
